Madame ambassador, from Beijing to Moscow, a diplomat’s life

Sylvie Bermann, in her book “Madam Ambassador, From Beijing to Moscow, a Diplomat’s Life” published in October 2022, offers a narrative of her career and shares anecdotes about the backstage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the geopolitical changes she has observed.

Her narrative spans a period from Maoist China to the era of Xi Jinping, from the fall of the USSR to the war in Ukraine under Vladimir Putin, as well as the challenges of multilateralism and the issues faced at the United Nations Security Council. Sylvie Bermann thus recounts forty years of diplomatic history.

As the first woman Ambassador of France in three member countries of the United Nations Security Council (China, United Kingdom, and Russia), Sylvie Bermann held important positions, such as the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador to the European Union’s Political and Security Committee in Brussels, and Director of the United Nations and International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Currently, she holds the position of Chair of the Board of Directors of the “Institut des Hautes Études de Défense Nationale” (IHEDN).
